MRA Dismisses Claims On Social Media

Regulator of the mining industry Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) has dismissed allegations on social media that the Ok Tedi Mining Limited has been illegally conducting alluvial gold mining while dredging sedimentation from the Fly River at Bige.

Managing Director Jerry Garry said when responding to the allegations that as far as the MRA was concerned, there is no evidence of OTML conducting alluvial gold mining. He said the MRA inspectors had been on board the dredge and that there was no mechanical gold processing plant on board the dredge.

He challenged people making these allegations to provide evidence to substantiate their allegations.

“You cannot just pluck words out of the blue, said Mr Garry.

You have to be responsible when making public statements on social media.”

Mr Garry said the MRA will always ensure that mining companies follow our laws and regulations when doing business in the country. Ok Tedi is no different inspite of the fact that it is a government own mining company…
